Township Road Study
In November 2015, engineers completed a comprehensive Roadway Maintenance Study (PDF) of all township-owned roads.
The analysis detailed the need for $32 million in road improvements and prioritized the work. In 2015, the township established a dedicated annual funding stream for road work of approximately $1 million a year.
Neighborhood Traffic Calming Policy & Procedures
The Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (PDF) establishes a process by which residents can submit requests for traffic calming improvements on local roads within South Fayette Township.
The township and/or the township traffic engineer evaluates each request. A plan may be implemented if resources are available and the request meets certain criteria.

Traffic Task Force
As business development heats up around Interstate 79, Route 50 and Washington Pike, South Fayette Township is working toward a plan for comprehensive road improvements aimed at easing traffic flow for decades to come.
South Fayette has created the Traffic Task Force along with local commercial developers, the municipalities of Bridgeville, Upper St. Clair and Collier, and officials from the state and Allegheny County. The group is working closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and studying the best ways to construct and fund road improvements so traffic will move more smoothly on Route 50 and Washington Pike, which are state-owned roads. The task force has applied for grant money to help fund the work.
Route 50 / Washington Pike / Chartiers St. / I-79
Based on input from the local Traffic Task Force, PennDOT plans to make improvements at the intersection on Route 50/Washington Pike and Chartiers Street, with work to start in early 2021 and be completed in June 2022, PennDOT announced in September 2020.
Work will require detours, short-term lane closures, and a full closure of the Chartiers Creek bridge over three weekends in early 2022.
Plans include:
- Add one lane to Chartiers Street (at Washington Pike)
- Add one lane to the Interstate 79 northbound on-ramp in South Fayette
- Widen the bridge over Chartiers Creek (on Washington Pike between South Fayette Township and Bridgeville Borough) from 4 lanes to 7 lanes:
- Toward Bridgeville:
- Straight - two lanes
- One dedicated right-turn lane onto Chartiers St.
- From Bridgeville:
- Right turn from bridge to I-79 northbound ramp
- Right turn from bridge to I-79/Millers Run Road
- Straight to continue on Washington Pike
- Left turn into The Crossings at South Fayette shopping center (Aldi, Starbucks etc.)
Traffic Lights
South Fayette Township has been awarded more than $458,000 in Green Light-Go grant funds from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to help upgrade and install adaptive traffic signals aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in the area of Washington Pike, Route 50 and Interstate 79.
The system, including traffic lights and software, automatically adjusts signal timing based on traffic conditions. Upgrades include the following 10 intersections (nine in South Fayette and one in neighboring Bridgeville):
- Route 50 & Millers Run Road
- Route 50 & Municipal Drive/Newbury Drive (UPMC Children's & Newbury Market entrances)
- Route 50 & Hickory Grade Road
- Route 50 & southbound Interstate 79 ramps
- Route 50 & northbound Interstate 79 ramps
- Route 50 & Washington Pike (T-intersection at Starbucks and Chipotle)
- Washington Pike & Daniell Drive (near King's Restaurant and Get Go)
- Washington Avenue & Chartiers Street (across the Chartiers Creek bridge in Bridgeville)
- Washington Pike & Bursca Drive
- Washington Pike & Twin Ponds Lane

Once the entire 13-mile project is complete in 2021, the highway will link with the existing 6-mile Findlay Connector to provide a direct link between Interstate 79 and Pittsburgh International Airport.
The South Fayette portion of the project includes an interchange that will allow drivers to reach the Southern Beltway from Route 50 and connect to I-79 without paying a toll.
